Landing page or website: how to decide
The question is not which one you need. It is what you are trying to do right now. One validates demand in days, the other serves an audience that already exists.
Founders usually ask whether they need a website or just a landing page. It is the wrong question, because the answer depends entirely on what you are trying to accomplish this quarter.
The right question is what job the thing has to do right now.
Choose a landing page when
You are testing a product idea before committing to building it
You are running paid traffic to one specific offer
You need to know whether anyone will pay before you spend more
You want something live in days rather than months
A landing page forces one promise aimed at one audience. That constraint is the whole value. It is a sprint, and the timeline is days.
Choose a website when
You have multiple products or audiences that need separate paths
Organic search is a real channel for you
Existing customers need documentation, support and resources
You are established enough that people look you up before buying
A website is a marathon. Expect two to six months to build one properly, and expect it to keep changing after that.
The rule most founders miss
The order is landing page, then validate demand, then website.
Most people go straight to building an expensive website before proving that anyone wants what they are selling. The site then becomes an argument for a product nobody has confirmed they need.
A landing page makes you commit to one promise for one audience. A website lets you avoid that commitment by talking to everyone at once, which is comfortable and tells you nothing.
If you are pre-revenue
You do not need a website. You need evidence that people will pay.
Build the landing page. Run the traffic. Read the data. Then decide whether a full site is the right next investment, and build it knowing what actually resonates.
When you are validating an idea, moving quickly is worth more than getting it perfect.
