Coached barbell training in Kansas City, Missouri

Get strong in a room of six

Grit Row is a coached barbell gym on 18th Street in Kansas City. Every session is capped at 6 people and run by a coach who knows your name, your knee, and the week you skipped. 308 beginners have come through since 2016. Your first 14 days cost $29.

You have already paid for a gym you stopped going to. Probably twice.

The last one had 400 machines, a 6am spin class, and nobody who noticed you were gone. You went 11 times in 8 months, felt watched every time you walked toward the racks, and let the auto-pay run until you were embarrassed enough to cancel it. In fact, the equipment was never the problem. What you never got was a written plan and a person who expected you to show up.

Your plan was a saved Instagram folder

6 weeks of workouts screenshotted off Instagram, then a deload week that quietly lasted until spring.

The rack queue beat you

4 squat racks, 30 people at 6pm, and a wait you were too polite to join. So you used the leg press again.

Your card got scanned. That was it.

8 months of check-ins and not one person asked how the shoulder was holding up.

A coach on the floor, a plan on paper, and 5 other people who notice the empty spot

Every session at Grit Row runs with a coach standing on the floor and a hard cap of 6 lifters. You get your program printed the day you join, and the coach who trains you rewrites it when your shoulder starts complaining in week 3. Why? Because a plan you can follow beats a gym you can merely access.

A coach in the room, every session

Dre or Priya stands on the floor for every coached session, watching bar paths and calling the next set. The app books your slot and does nothing else, because it cannot see your hips shift on rep 4.

Your program is written for your body

Rebuilt every 6 weeks by the person who watched you lift for the last 6. Printed, punched and kept in a folder with your name on the spine, and it leaves with you if you ever leave.

An hour, door to door

4 to 6 lifts with real rest between sets. The session is built to fit the gap before school pickup, and it ends on the hour.

What the $29 buys you, day by day

You will know exactly what happens before you pay. Nothing on day 1 is a surprise.

01

Day 1 - the 45-minute assessment

One-on-one with a coach. We watch how you hinge, squat and press, run an InBody scan, and write down what hurts. You will not be asked to complete a workout and nothing is timed.

02

Days 2 to 6 - five lifts, empty bar

Squat, hinge, press, row, carry. You move an empty 45lb bar until the pattern is clean, then we start loading it. Most people are adding plates by the end of the first week.

03

Days 7 to 14 - the real program

Three coached sessions with the same coach and the same 6 faces, then your second one-on-one, where your day 1 numbers get compared and the program you keep gets written. On day 14 you decide whether to stay, and there is nothing to cancel if you do not.

What $149 a month actually buys

Listed properly, because every gym in Kansas City calls its facilities world class and not one of them tells you how many bars are in the room.

8 racks, 6 lifters

8 Rogue racks, a bar for every person in the session, and change plates down to 1.25lb so the jump from one week to the next is small enough to actually make. Nobody in the room is waiting on equipment.

A slot at 10am and a slot at 8pm

34 coached sessions a week, so the room is never the 6pm scrum you left. Book, swap or cancel from the app up to 2 hours before it starts.

An InBody scan every 8 weeks

Muscle, fat, and each limb measured separately. We print it and staple it to your last one so you can see the direction of travel.

Open gym on your door code

Members get code access outside coached hours for accessory work, conditioning, or a quiet Sunday session on your own.

A physical therapist in the building

Priya spent 9 years in musculoskeletal PT before this. Aches get looked at on the floor, and referred out properly when they should be.

Phones stay in the cubbies

Nobody is filming their set behind you during coached hours. The only person watching your bar path is paid to.

Two coaches. The one watching your bar path in January is the one watching it in October.

Dre Whitaker and Priya Raman cover all 34 coached sessions between them. The coach who watched your first empty-bar squat is the coach who signs off your first 225.

Dre Whitaker, head coach

11 years coaching, USAW Level 2, opened Grit Row in 2016 with 3 racks and a rented unit. Runs the 5:30am and 6pm sessions. He is the one who texts when you miss a Wednesday.

Priya Raman, coach and physical therapist

9 years as a musculoskeletal physical therapist for the NHS in Leeds, then Kansas City in 2019. Runs the assessment for every new member and writes the programs for anyone training around an injury.

What people say once the novelty has worn off

Every one of these members has trained here longer than 18 months.

I cancelled two gym memberships before this one. Nine days in I went quiet, and Dre texted me on a Thursday morning asking whether the knee was the problem. Nobody at the last two places ever noticed. 19 months now, 3 times a week.

Marcus Ellery, 44, structural engineer

I pulled 225lb in April. In January I was asking my husband to load the stroller into the trunk, because bending over cost me two days.

Renee Okafor, 38, ICU nurse

I was certain I would be the oldest person in the room by 20 years. I am not even in the top 3. The 10am session is mostly people my age.

Bill Hartsook, 61, retired teacher

Three ways in. Nothing to cancel on the trial, 30 days’ notice on the other two.

There is no joining fee and no annual contract. You pay $149 on the day you join and $149 a month after that. To leave, you send a text and pay one more month.

14-Day Trial - $29

Ask about a place

The questions people ask on the phone before they book

Answered here so you do not have to make the call.

I have not trained in 9 years. Am I too far behind?

About 6 in 10 people who start here have not lifted since school. Day 1 is an empty bar and a conversation, and the only thing we measure is how you move.

Is there a contract?

No. Month to month, cancel by text with 30 days’ notice. There is no joining fee and no cancellation fee. The trial is a one-off $29 and your card is charged once.

What happens if I miss sessions?

Swap or cancel from the app up to 2 hours before. Miss 2 in a row and a coach will message you. That is the whole reason this place works.

I have a rebuilt knee and a bad lower back.

Bring your notes if you have them. Priya has written programs around injuries for 9 years, and refers out to a clinic on Southwest Boulevard when something needs a scan rather than a squat.

Is this CrossFit?

No. There is no clock and no scoreboard. You do 4 to 6 lifts with proper rest between sets and leave in an hour.

Where do I park?

Free lot behind the building off Summit, 14 spaces, plus free street parking on 18th after 6pm.

Five spots open in the room this month

34 coached sessions times 6 seats is 204 spots a week. Members train 3 times a week, so the room holds 68 people and we will not book past it. There are 63 of you today. Pick a start day, pay the $29, and Dre calls you within 24 hours to book your assessment.
